Caleb ChapmanCaleb’s vision and accomplishments have marked him as a rising star both domestically and internationally. As the President of Caleb Chapman Music, Caleb oversees the development of over 150 of Utah’s most talented young musicians in eleven elite ensembles, including the Crescent Super Band, which has frequently been hailed as one of the best youth big bands in the world. In 2011, Caleb was named the “John LaPorta International Jazz Educator of the Year”, one of the highest honors in music education. At age 37, he was by far the youngest to ever receive this honor.
Caleb’s bands have been featured at many of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals including North Sea (The Netherlands), Montreux (Switzerland), Vienne (France), Umbria (Italy), and Tuscany (Italy). Most recently, the Crescent Super Band was featured with jazz icon Toshiko Akiyoshi at the Telluride Jazz Festival. Caleb’s bands have also performed with nearly 200 guest artists, including Grammy-winners Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, Peter Erskine, Kurt Elling, Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Bergeron, Dave Weckl, Nicholas Payton, Jeff Coffin, Eric Marienthal, Ernie Watts, and Bob Mintzer. They have also been featured with musicians from such recognizable bands as Journey, Dave Matthews Band, Steve Miller Band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Tower of Power, Genesis, the Saturday Night Live Band, and many others. Additionally, his bands have been featured on the Sirius XM “Real Jazz” Channel and released 8 full length albums on the Big Swing Face record label.
Caleb’s students have been honored with 17 DownBeat Awards (7 of which came in
2012). The band has also won seven consecutive “Best of State” awards for Utah and the prestigious Best of State Statue Award identifying Caleb’s program as the top organization in Arts and
Entertainment in Utah, beating out every other professional music, arts, and film organization in the state for the honor. Caleb personally won the Utah Best of State medal for Utah’s “Best Educator”
(2011) and “Best Music Educator” (2012).
Caleb's efforts in music have also earned three declarations from Utah former Governor, John Huntsman, Jr. He was named to the "Fab
50" List for 2010 by Utah Valley
Magazine. In 2007 he was honored as the inaugural inductee into the Horne School of Music Hall of Fame and received the “Superior Accomplishment in Music Award” from the Utah Music Educators
Association. He is the 2006 recipient of the KUER FM90 “Voice of Jazz Award”. He currently sits on the International Board of the Jazz Education Network (JEN).
Caleb is an active author. His book, "The Articulate Jazz Musician", written with Dave Matthews Band saxophonist, Jeff Coffin, will be released by Alfred Publishing in January of 2013. He has recently written for Hal Leonard Publishing and JAZZed Magazine, as well.
In addition to directing and producing bands, Caleb is an active saxophonist. Most recently, he performed the National Anthem for the NBA at a sold-out match with the Utah Jazz and the Miami Heat, the only saxophonist ever to receive the invitation in Utah. Caleb is a featured clinician and sponsored performer for Yamaha Saxophones, Rico Reeds, JodyJazz Mouthpieces, and Planet Waves Cables.
